The restaurant, which was designed by owner/architect in 1990 as an oriental themed purpose built restaurant. It is divided into two main areas;  Upstairs favoured by larger groups for festive or party dining and downstairs favoured by locals and business people wanting a quieter ambience. Upstairs seats up to 50 people with large tables featuring a lazy suzie in the middle. There is a separate sound system also. This area is frequented by many Thai groups that have come from Bangkok on the way to Queenstown. Apart from being on the main truck line to Queenstown (5hrs away), there is the biggest shopping centre in the South Island only 1 km away, Westfield Shopping Centre (more than 100 shops).People from all walks of life are all regular customers of the Thai Orchid, which is reputed to serve the most Authentic Thai food in Christchurch. The main reason for this is the handpicked chefs by the owner from Thailand. They have no chance not to make genuine Authentic Thai Cuisine because of the thousands of Thai Tourists that dine upstairs.
